2016 MAZDA MX-5

Lighter, smaller, quicker and more nimble than its predecessor, MX-5 has adopted Mazda’s full suite of SKYACTIV Technology and KODO—Soul of Motion design. In the process, MX-5 has shed approximately 150 pounds from its predecessor, with a curb weight of 2,332 lbs. when equipped with SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission (2,381 lbs. with the six-speed automatic transmission). Starting MSRP: $24,915

An Open-Top Sports Car for All Drivers

MX-5 was designed around its driver, with a thought given to even the slightest details as part of Mazda’s human-centric driving position. Pedals have been optimized to fall in-line with the natural movement of the driver’s feet for greater comfort. The hood has been lowered, the windshield A-pillars pushed back and made more upright for greater visibility and the exterior paint color has been brought into the door panels – all to provide a greater sensation of the world outside of the car. Passengers have also been positioned inset to feel in-line with the center of the vehicle. All of this has been done for Jinba Ittai, elevating the driving experience in connecting the driver with the vehicle. With driver-centric ergonomics and a redesigned cockpit layout, an even greater number of drivers will be able to experience MX-5.

KODO—Soul of Motion Design

Since the debut of the Mazda Shinari concept in 2010, Mazda has been developing its KODO—Soul of Motion design language, which is defined by a long hood, short overhangs, a cropped cabin pushed far back on the body and large wheels moved as far as feasible towards all four corners. The challenge to the design team with MX-5 was to translate the KODO theme to the car’s smaller scale, while keeping true to the car’s pure identity.

Designers focused on the following:

– Beautiful proportions to make occupants look good
– A deeper expression of the KODO design theme that conveys agility
– Body surfaces that richly express the Japanese sense of contrast between stillness and motion
– An interior design that breaks down the boundaries between the inside and outside of the car
– A snug-feeling cockpit with symmetry and a singular axis that fosters concentration on driving

Designers worked painstakingly to create a shape that was reminiscent of previous MX-5s, but to move forward with a lower, sleeker profile as well that makes MX-5 look as though it is gripping the road. Helping to tell that story is a newly introduced Ceramic Metallic paint, a multi-dimensional paint color that highlights MX-5’s purposeful details.

Key aspects designers strived to achieve for MX-5 ensured:

– The MX-5 is equally beautiful whether the top is up or down
– The interior maximizes the pleasure of open-top driving
– The soft top is easy to operate while seated
– Wind control makes driving with the top down a pleasure
– Designers worked with engineers to ensure that a “wind-in-the-hair” feeling remained
– Headrest speakers further enhance top-down driving enjoyment

Keeping the front of the car low was a challenge, given regional bumper-height regulations in different global markets, so the use of LED headlights on all models became a requirement because of the smaller space they require to produce a given amount of light. As on previous models, the face of the MX-5 Miata defines the playfulness of the car. The headlights, which have LED low and high beams with a bulb turn signal, run cooler than the HID xenon headlights they replace and are 4.1-percent brighter.

The headlight units are also 40mm shallower, 20mm shorter in vertical height, have a 40-percent thickness in the outer lens and are approximately 15-percent lighter weight than the headlights they replace. The results: A clean shape with taut lines that conveys a sense of leanness, stability and beautiful surfaces.

Worth the Weight

As has been the case with all of Mazda’s vehicles since the advent of SKYACTIV Technology, the MX-5’s weight has been reduced from its predecessor to improve efficiency, performance, handling, agility and steering precision. Taking more than 150 lbs. out of what was already one of the lightest vehicles for sale in North America was no easy task, so engineers had to think about each component of the MX-5 to achieve their objectives while maintaining a 50:50 weight distribution.

The air conditioner is approximately 20 percent lighter than the unit in the previous generation. The soft top – lauded since the launch of the first MX-5 Miata in 1990 as the singularly best-designed manually operated soft-top – is 65 grams lighter than before through the introduction of aluminum top-bows and supports, and is even easier to operate, yet it is insulated to provide a quieter interior. In making the vehicle lighter, the trunk was reshaped to have a wider opening and a deeper recess to allow for two weekend travel bags, which was not possible in previous models.

With the 2016 MX-5, the amount of high-tensile steel (780 MPa or higher) used throughout the structure of the MX-5 has increased from 58 percent of the car to 71 percent. All exterior panels but the windshield frame and doors are made of aluminum, reducing the weight of the body-in-white by approximately 45 lbs. Seats are more than 35-percent thinner than the outgoing model’s, owing to a net and urethane seat material replacing traditional springs. This, in turn, allowed engineers to remove approximately 17 lbs. from each seat and position them lower in the MX-5 for an improved center of gravity, visibility and functionality within the interior for taller drivers. It’s all about the details.

Driving Dynamics, Safety and the Balance of Jinba Ittai

In creating the fourth-generation MX-5, Mazda simplified every single part of the car all to create a car with the poise and stability expected of an MX-5. Mazda’s new sports car features its only application of SKYACTIV-CHASSIS and SKYACTIV-BODY for a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Like previous MX-5 models, the fourth-generation roadster uses a double-wishbone front suspension and rear multilink setup that is lightweight and highly rigid, while never losing sight of the need to deliver a smooth and civilized street ride.

Coupled with the high use of high-tensile steel in the body, frame and underbody crossmembers is a new double-pinion electronic power assist steering (DP-EPAS) rack with a smaller steering gear ratio designed to instill a sense road feel while reducing steering “kickback.” In discussing the level of detail designed into the new MX-5, even the friction in the steering shaft was reduced by minimizing the angle of the universal-joints in the shaft, because engineers identified a miniscule “catch”-feel through the steering wheel as the joint rotates.

The 2016 MX-5’s body is designed with a continuous frame from the front bumper through the rear bulkhead that suppresses deformation and diffuses impact forces in the event of an accident, not unlike other Mazda vehicles. Additional reinforcements specially designed for an open-top vehicle were added behind the seats. With the enhancements, Mazda’s engineers expect MX-5 to meet or exceed all international NCAP safety standards.

The structure also is designed to maximize surefootedness in all driving conditions. Coupled with all SKYACTIV Technologies, the 2016 MX-5 is designed to drive and handle in the fashion that has drawn rave reviews the world over through three previous generations, only better.

ALL-NEW 2016 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA FEATURES REDESIGNED BOSE SOUND SYSTEM

MAY 19, 2015 — Today, Bose announces a new sound system for Mazda’s fourth-generation MX-5 Miata roadster.  Redesigned and updated with newly engineered speakers and proprietary technologies, the Bose® system in the 2016 MX-5 delivers improved audio performance — optimized for driving with the top down.

“Through the years of our close collaboration with Mazda, we’ve witnessed firsthand how the MX-5 has become an industry icon with a loyal legion of owners and enthusiasts around the globe,” said Marc Mansell, vice president, Bose Automotive Systems Division.  “So, we wanted to make the sound system for the new MX-5 better than it’s ever been.  We improved audio quality, and for open-air driving, the experience is thrilling.  You’ll feel and hear the difference the first time you listen.”

Adjusting for Open-Air Driving

Cabin acoustics in the MX-5 differ significantly depending on roof position.  When the top is down, reproducing lifelike sound with a conventional approach compromises clarity and musical detail — vocals and instruments can be lost when competing with ambient noise.  But advanced Bose engineering solves that.  Bose tuned the system with two separate equalization (EQ) settings — one for top-down driving and one for top-up.  The EQ settings, combined with Bose AudioPilot® 2 noise compensation technology, adjust automatically depending on roof position, wind noise and road noise.

Bose also added new speakers to the driver and passenger seat headrests. Debuting in the 2016 Mazda MX-5, each pair of 2-inch (50mm) Bose® UltraNearfield™ speakers were developed specifically for headrest placement and performance — rather than simply placing conventional speakers in a headrest to add a feature.  The new Bose UltraNearfield speakers work with proprietary Bose TrueSpace® digital signal processing technology — and it’s this combination that delivers on the promise of headrest speakers.  TrueSpace technology creates a wide sound stage, even though the speakers are just inches away from the listener.  The music envelops the driver and passenger, it’s spacious and natural, and remarkably, it doesn’t fade in the breeze.

A pair of 6.5-inch (165mm) speakers are placed in each door for full-range sound, and 1-inch (25mm) neodymium tweeters are located in each A-pillar for enhanced high-frequency clarity.  Powerful bass is delivered by a 5.25-inch (130mm) woofer housed in a 6-liter custom enclosure designed to fit under the front passenger footwell without taking up valuable cabin space.  Completing the system is a dedicated, 7-channel digital Bose amplifier mounted below the MX-5’s convertible-top storage space.

The 2016 MX-5 Miata continues a long history of collaboration and innovation between Bose and Mazda.  The first Bose sound system for Mazda was introduced in 1993, and Bose audio has been offered in Miata models since 1998.

IRVINE, Calif., April 20, 2015 — The wait is almost over, as North America-bound 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata production began today, signaling the imminent arrival of the next generation of the world’s most popular two-seat roadster at U.S. dealers. Additionally, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has released pricing for the entire MX-5 range, including the first 1,000 cars earmarked as Launch Edition models.

“The three trim levels available – Sport, Club and Grand Touring – are tailored for three very different types of customers, broadening the MX-5’s appeal,” said Rod McLaughlin, MX-5 vehicle line manager, MNAO. “Whether customers opt for a Sport, Club, Grand Touring or Launch Edition, we’re confident the new MX-5 will deliver the same owner passion, excitement and pride that have made the previous generations among the most beloved cars on the road or racetrack at any price point.”

MX-5 Miata Launch Edition Limited Treats Buyers with Creature Comforts, Exclusivity
The 2016 MX-5 Launch Edition will comprise the first 1,000 fourth-generation roadsters sold in the U.S., carrying unique badging and with an MSRP of $30,1951. MX-5 Launch Edition comes equipped with features reserved for the MX-5 Grand Touring trim, in addition to Advanced Keyless entry, which is optional in other trim levels. All 1,000 Launch Editions are painted Soul Red with a Sport Tan leather interior – a combination exclusive to the Launch Edition for 2016.

To purchase an MX-5 Launch Edition, customers can currently preregister at www.LongLiveTheRoadster.com and will receive a reminder email prior to orders opening on May 5. Customers will then have the opportunity to place a $500 deposit toward the purchase of a 2016 MX-5 Launch Edition, also providing them the opportunity to select a dealership from where they can take delivery. MX-5s are expected arrive in dealers starting late summer.

The Launch Edition’s sole option will be the choice of a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or the six-speed automatic, the latter of which carries an MSRP of $31,2702.

“The MX-5 Launch Edition will give enthusiasts the opportunity to take ownership of one of the very first, very exclusive, 2016 MX-5s to arrive in the U.S.,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “Along with the privilege of exclusivity and being among the first 1,000 to take delivery, owners will be able to enjoy one of the purest expressions of open-top driving exhilaration available today as well as our latest entertainment, safety and luxury technologies – many of which are unique among sports cars.”

Customers who take delivery of an MX-5 Launch Edition also will receive a Mazda-branded BOSE®SoundLink® Mini Bluetooth® speaker in a customized gift box, along with select items from Mazda’s upcoming Heritage Collection apparel line.

MX-5 Sport to Have More Standard Features Than Previous Generation
At the opposite end of the MX-5 lineup, the 2016 MX-5 Sport has a starting MSRP of $24,9153, riding on 16-inch alloy wheels and carrying a host of new standard features such as a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission, cruise control, LED headlights and tail lights, Bluetooth phone pairing and audio streaming, leather-wrapped shift knob, power door locks, single USB input and cruise control.

As in the Launch Edition and all models, an automatic transmission option is available as a $1,075 option. Advanced Keyless entry is available for $130 (standard with automatic transmission).

MX-5 Club and Grand Touring Personalize Roadster Experience
Those who want to step up to a higher level of content will have a choice between distinct trim packages: the distilled, performance-focused MX-5 Club or MX-5 Grand Touring, lavished in premium amenities and technology.

MX-5 Club has a starting MSRP of $28,6004 and adds 17-inch gunmetal alloy wheels wrapped in 205/45R17 tires, front air dam and trunk-mounted rear lip spoiler, piano black seat back bars and exterior mirror caps, MAZDA CONNECT™ with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system and commander control knob and an AM/FM/HD/SiriusXM® satellite radio with a nine-speaker BOSE® audio system with headrest speakers – all in addition to MX-5 Sport’s standard equipment. A limited-slip rear differential, Bilstein® shocks and shock-tower brace are standard when equipped with the manual transmission.

Additionally, MX-5 Club is available with a package that equips it with forged, lightweight BBS 17-inch wheels, Brembo® front brake rotors and calipers with painted front and rear calipers, functional aerodynamic side sill extensions and rear bumper skirt.

Moving to MX-5 Grand Touring endows the roadster with 17-inch bright alloy wheels, leather-trimmed heated seats, automatic climate control, BOSE® nine-speaker audio system with headrest speakers, AM/FM/HD/SiriusXM® radio, MAZDA CONNECT™ with and seven-inch touchscreen monitor, commander control knob, Homelink® garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive headlights in addition to MX-5 Sport’s standard equipment. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety features including blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning. MX-5 Grand Touring has an MSRP of $30,0655.

Smaller, lighter and more focused, the 2016 MX-5 is purpose-built with one goal in mind: providing the thrills and wind-in-the-hair driving experience that only the MX-5 can deliver. At 2,332 lbs. when equipped with SKYACTIV-MT (2,381 lbs. with the automatic transmission), MX-5 is approximately 150 lbs. lighter than the vehicle it replaces as a result of Mazda’s efficient SKYACTIV®6 TECHNOLOGY. MX-5’s lighter weight, enhanced technologies and greater performance should help ensure that the 26th year of the MX-5 will be just as exciting from behind the wheel as the first 25 have been.

MAZDA STARTS PRODUCTION OF ALL-NEW MX-5

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today began production of the all-new Mazda MX-5 two-seater lightweight sports car (known as Mazda Roadster in Japan) at Ujina Plant No.1 in Hiroshima. The first models produced are destined for the Japanese market. Sales of the all-new MX-5 will begin in Japan around June this year and interested buyers can make an appointment for pre-sale discussions through a dedicated website from noon on Friday, March 20. Following sales start in Japan, the MX-5 will be progressively rolled out to overseas markets.

The MX-5 is an iconic model representing Mazda’s vehicle engineering philosophy: the pursuit of driving pleasure. With production exceeding 950,000 units as of the end of January 2015, the MX-5 continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car.

In order to respond to ever increasing demands for safety features and environmental performance while maintaining the element of fun that has always defined the model, development of the fourth generation MX-5 was carried out under the motto “innovate in order to preserve”. In addition to incorporating SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO—Soul of Motion design, development focused on enhancing the senses and sensations through which people enjoy cars.

Moving forward, Mazda will continue to enrich the lives of its customers through a variety of touch points including the production of high-quality vehicles, and become a brand that maintains a special bond with its customers.

About Bose Automotive Systems

In the early 1980s, Bose engineers created the world’s first factory-installed premium sound systems for General Motors luxury automobiles.  Unlike conventional or aftermarket automotive systems, Bose systems were designed and tuned for a specific vehicle — and changed the industry.

Since then, Bose has developed proprietary speaker designs, advanced amplification and signal processing technologies, exclusive analysis and design tools, and technology for managing engine and powertrain sounds inside vehicles — all based on a heritage of research and engineering.

Today, Bose® automotive sound systems are recognized globally as the industry benchmark for performance and customer satisfaction.  For more information, visit Bose.com/auto.
