2015 LEXUS NX

  • The first Lexus for the fast-growing premium mid-size crossover/SUV segment
  • Sharp styling aired with Lexus refinement and innovative technology
  • NX 300h with 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle full hybrid powertrain, targeting sub-120g/km CO2 emissions, to be launched in Europe October 2014
  • NX 200t powered by new 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine, to be launched in selected markets February 2015
  • Available with front and all-wheel drive, and in Lexus  F Sport versions

The NX marks Lexus’s debut in the premium mid-size crossover market. It displays an edgy, contemporary design that’s aimed at attracting new customers, notably urban people with active lifestyles. Two powertrains will be offered in the UK: a highly efficient hybrid system in the NX 300h; and a new Lexus-developed 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine in the NX 200t. Both all-wheel and front-wheel drive versions will be available within the range.

The NX 300h will debut in the UK in October 2014, in all-wheel and front-wheel drive versions; the NX 200t will follow in March 2015, exclusively as an F Sport AWD model.

Innovative on-board technology will be available, including a wireless charging tray for easy charging of mobile phones and other devices and the first application of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touchpad control. Further features include a new Panoramic View Monitor, a comprehensive multi-information display (incorporating for the first time a G-sensor and boost meter), head-up display, blind spot monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The NX 300h and 200t F Sport versions display a bolder design, with specific features such as an individual treatment of the spindle grille, a lower front bumper, dedicated wheel design, black-finished door mirror housings, dedicated interior colours and trims and sports seats. Beyond the styling these versions of NX will benefit from performance dampers.

Takeaki Kato, the NX Chief Engineer, said: “The NX is a premium crossover, combining performance, numerous on-board technologies and alluring design.

“Luxury is epitomised by small but important details, as can be witnessed in the attention to detail in areas such as the feel of the switchgear, the arrangement of the courtesy lights, the metallic finishes for the wheels and other innovations that will set the standards for future Lexus models.

“Luxury touches apart, the NX was designed both to complement daily life and support active lifestyles at the weekend.”

Exterior design

The NX has been substantially influenced by the LF-NX concept and has been designed to express a sense of agility not usually associated with an SUV, as well as the practical quality required for driving around town.

The flared front and rear elements are fused to a diamond-shaped body which has its starting point in the spindle grille. The flared arches house 17 or 18-inch wheels and contribute to the car’s crouching, muscular stance. Lexus’s distinctive design language is also expressed in the innovative LED headlamps and daytime running lights.

The side profile shows the peak of the roofline is set towards the back of the vehicle, which translates into ample headroom for those sitting in the rear, while creating a tight silhouette.

Details include an innovative door mirror design and a door handle mechanism with a concealed key barrel and integrated lighting, features which enhance the overall premium look by creating a smooth finish along the side of the car.

The rear is punctuated by Lexus’s L-shape combination lamps, fitted with seamless LED lighting. The bodywork design echoes the spindle grille treatment at the front.

Interior design

Lexus’s ambition for the NX’s cabin was to produce a design that combines the structural beauty of a high-performance vehicle with materials and textures that express premium quality and functionality.

The car’s SUV strengths are expressed in details such as a thick-rimmed steering wheel, a central silver frame embedded in the instrument panel and robust knee pads for driver and front passenger. Contrasting textures around the cabin and the use of a quilted seat upholstery pattern reference the NX’s status as a crossover vehicle.

The NX continues the development of Lexus’s display and operation zone dashboard design concept and provides the driver with easy, intuitive command of its advanced technology features using new and improved HMI controls.

Lexus has also focused on interior space and seating, ensuring ample overall headroom and a generous front-to-rear couple distance. The NX also has the longest luggage area load length in its class.

Powertrains

NX 300h

The NX 300h uses a sophisticated hybrid system control specially developed for the model, using the proven Lexus 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine, generator, motor and battery. Total system output is 195bhp/145kW.

Lexus is targeting CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km, which corresponds to combined cycle fuel economy of 54.3mpg.

The NX 300h will be available in front and all-wheel drive versions, equipped with one or two electric motors respectively.

Features specific to the hybrid NX include sprung-weight damping control to increase ride comfort and handling stability by reducing pitching when driving on uneven surfaces.

In common with other Lexus models equipped with Lexus Hybrid Drive, the NX 300h will offer customers considerable cost of ownership advantages, thanks to a combination of low maintenance and running costs, high residual values and significant tax incentives or benefits in many European countries.

European and UK deliveries will begin in October this year.

NX 200t

The NX is the first model to use a new Lexus 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine, engineered for excellent fuel economy, agile performance and responsiveness. Maximum power is 235bhp/175kW between 4,800 and 5,600rpm and maximum torque is 350 Nm, available  from 1,650 to 4,000rpm.

The engine underwent more than one million kilometres of testing over different road conditions and in harsh driving environments. Its design features a world-first combination of water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger.

It is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission that has been specially tuned for the NX. This uses a new, torque-demand control logic, calculating and maximising the required engine torque to deliver quick response to throttle inputs and high fuel efficiency.

The NX 200t will be available with front and all-wheel drive in selected European countries from February 2015. In the UK it will feature exclusively in the NX 200t F Sport AWD, with customer deliveries expected from March 2015.

Chassis and suspension

The new NX has been engineered for agile driving, handling stability, body control and ride comfort, including yaw-rate response to steering inputs and stability over uneven surfaces.

At the heart of the design is a highly rigid body, with extensive reinforcement of the underbody. Other key elements include additional bulkheads and spot-welding, suspension braces and the application of Lexus’s body adhesive and laser screw welding technologies, and a high-rigidity glass adhesive.

Some NX models are equipped with new-design dampers and Lexus’s new-generation Adaptive Variable Suspension. Linked to the vehicle’s Drive Mode Select system, this can change the level of damping force to improve comfort and reduce body roll.

  • NX 300h rich in new technologies for driver information, control and on-board entertainment
  • New crossover features first Lexus use of a wireless phone charging tray, G-Monitor and 360-degree Panoramic View system
  • First in-car use of ClariFi™ technology to improve music reproduction frrom compressed digital files, featured in the NX 300h’s Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system
  • New NX 300h available to order now, customer deliveries from October

From phone charging to capturing an all-round view of your surroundings, the new Lexus NX 300h has new technology features that will make life on board easier, better informed and more enjoyable.

Going beyond the technical sophistication of its full hybrid powertrain and advanced safety and handling systems, Lexus’s first compact crossover will be available with a raft of novel and genuinely useful features. These include a handy wireless charging tray for mobile phones and other portable devices; the first application of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad control; a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor; and a Lexus-first G-sensor.

The top of the range Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system benefits from new ClariFi™ technology that improves sound reproduction from compressed digital files.

Wireless charging tray

NX 300h owners can recharge their smartphones and other compatible items (conforming to the international qi protocol) simply by placing them in a dedicated charging tray located handily between the front seats, with no need for a cable connection. The tray is part of the standard specification for F Sport and Premier models and is available as an option on the NX 300h Luxury.

Panoramic View Monitor

The NX 300h Premier is equipped with Lexus’s first 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor. This gives drivers greater reassurance, especially when moving in confined spaces, on or off-road, at speeds up to 12mph (20km/h).

A dedicated ECU mounted behind the C-pillar constantly monitors input from four interconnected cameras located on the door mirrors, front grille and rear trim. It processes the images and relays them to the audio and navigation display monitor in a range of seven sequences. The driver can even view the NX as if looking down from above and accurately check its surroundings before driving off.

The monitor lets the driver see obstacles that, with conventional front and rear-view cameras, would remain concealed in blind spots. It uses full-screen imaging, without the “letterbox” effect created by an analogue camera format.

The Panoramic View Monitor works in conjunction with parking assist system and the Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which detects obstacles coming from either side in the driver’s blind spot when reversing out of a parking space.

Remote Touch Interface touchpad

Lexus has revised and improved its Remote Touch Interface control, introducing a new touchpad on the centre console.

It’s designed to make it easier to locate the on-screen icons and is fitted with a palm rest for comfort. It provides fast, intuitive, on-the-move access to ancillary controls for features such as the climate control, audio and navigation, with minimum driver distraction. It’s also designed and positioned so that it can easily be used by the front seat passenger.

G-Monitor

The NX 300h F Sport features Lexus’s first G-force sensors – the G-Monitor – which send live data to the multi-information display.

The G-Monitor screen shows a G-ball moving in line with the lateral and longitudinal forces on the vehicle, giving the peak force experienced in each direction. Additional display bars indicate the steering angle, throttle opening and hydraulic brake pressure.

Mark Levinson Premium Surround System with Clari-fi™

Lexus has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with premium audio specialist Mark Levinson and the new NX 300h marks another development in sound quality with a 14-speaker Premium Surround Sound System that is the first in-car package to use Clari-fi™ to improve the reproduction of sound from digital sources. The system is fitted as standard to the NX 300h Premier.

The pre-programmed sound equalising in the NX 300h differs from that in other Lexus models in that it takes into account the difference in interior space and cabin lay-out. The Mark Levinson system has been purpose-built for the new NX, and has been engineered to enhance the quality of music sourced from compressed digital files.

Key to this is the first in-car use of Clari-fi™, which analyses and improves the audio quality of all types of compressed, digitalised music sources.

The Mark Levinson system also uses patented high-efficiency technology which more than doubles sound output without increasing energy use. The package includes a 12-channel Class D amplifier and new Unity technology that places 9cm speakers at each end of the instrument panel. Total system output is 125 watts per channel and 835 watts overall, with distortion limited to less than 0.1 per cent.

THE AUDIO-ENRICHING HARMAN CLARI-FI TECHNOLOGY IN THE NEW LEXUS NX

First vehicle to use proprietary HARMAN technology that rebuilds audio quality lost in the digital compression process

Vienna, Austria – SEPTEMBER 25, 2014 – The all-new 2015 Lexus NX, being premiered in Europe today, will be the first vehicle to incorporate the innovative Clari-Fi™ technology by HARMAN, the premium global audio and infotainment group. Clari-Fi automatically analyzes and improves the audio quality of all types of compressed, digitalized music sources. The technology will be a feature of the available Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System in the Lexus NX.

The audio industry has experienced a dramatic shift from vinyl LPs and CDs to compressed, digital files enabling the sharing of music across a variety of mobile devices as well as streaming music services increasingly accessed found in today’s vehicles. The compression process has made audio more mobile than ever, but at the price of audio quality. Compressing audio files can discard up to 90 percent of the original audio content captured in the studio. As a result, consumers cannot experience music in the way the artist originally intended. Clari-Fi transforms the listening experience back to a pre-compression era, by addressing this deterioration of audio quality by restoring what has been lost, to deliver a rich, uncompromised listening experience from any compressed music source.

“We are proud to continue our 13-year partnership with Lexus, and excited that the new NX vehicle, which will be the first automobile in the world to feature Clari-Fi, will also be available on the European market” said Dinesh C. Paliwal, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, HARMAN. “Clari-Fi is a significant technological advancement that transforms the listening experience for the millions of people who don’t want to sacrifice quality for the convenience of downloaded and streaming digital music. At HARMAN, we develop technologies that help recording artists realize their vision. We also want consumers to experience the music the way it was intended – whether at home, on the go or in the car. Now, drivers with the Lexus NX Mark Levinson surround sound system will have an unparalleled listening experience with the breakthrough Clari-Fi solution from HARMAN.”

Unlike other solutions in the market today, Clari-Fi does not simply add equalization and boost bass, or focus only on leveraging high-resolution file formats on a proprietary device. HARMAN’s approach with Clari-Fi analyzes digital audio signals in real time and rebuilds them during playback. It does not mask the effects of heavy compression by adding new effects, but instead uses an algorithm to put back what is lost during the compression process. The result? High-quality audio from compressed digital files from any playback source – including the car.

“Consumers today demand that their cars function as a place where they can stay connected to their digital lives,” said Thilo Koslowski, Vice President and Automotive Practice Leader, Gartner. “As vehicles continue to offer greater connectivity and streaming capabilities, the use of digitalized audio formats will rise and with it consumers’ desire for unprecedented in-vehicle audio experiences.”

The Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System in the Lexus NX incorporates Clari-Fi technology across 14 speakers in 12 locations, carefully designed and located strategically throughout the vehicle cabin, to create an optimum listening experience. Powered by a 10-channel ML5 amplifier, the 835-watt audio system delivers the highest quality audio experience to driver and passengers alike.

Clari-Fi technology is already featured in HARMAN’s JBL Authentics Series wireless home entertainment sound systems and will be incorporated into a range of Home, Multimedia, and Automotive products in the coming year.

LEXUS DESIGNS A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ITS NX 300h WITH LED TECHNOLOGY

Lexus fully exploits the brilliance, rapid-action and low-energy benefits of LED technology in its lighting design for the new NX 300h crossover. Both exterior lights and the lighting in the cabin make extensive use of LEDs to improve safety, visibility and perceived quality.

According to model grade, up to 90 LEDs are used in the external lights. All versions have LED low-beam headlights, daytime running lights, fog lights and rear lamp clusters, plus courtesy lights in the doorhandles that also serve as puddle lights.

The LED design of the front fog lights on Luxury, F Sport and Premier versions of the NX 300h provides a clever low-speed cornering function. As the driver operates the turn indicators to negotiate a turn or junction, two LEDS in the lights automatically adjust to give better illumination in line with the car’s direction of travel.

The LED headlights on the Premier grade model have an automatic high beam function, which uses a camera mounted on the windscreen to pick up on-coming vehicles and traffic ahead. When it detects that the road ahead is clear, it switches the lights to high beam, dipping them again when necessary to avoid dazzling other road users.

The NX 300h has a welcoming lighting sequence that begins as soon as you approach the car, carrying the key. As you draw near, welcome LEDs illuminate the door handles and shine down on the ground immediately below. At the same time the Remote Touch Interface touch pad will light up in the cabin (where fitted).

Attention to detail inside the NX includes footwell lighting that centres on the position of the front seats and the use of LEDs for the rear dome light, to give better night-time visibility. For the first time in a Lexus, there are touch-controlled switches in the headlining to operate the dome and map lights.

NEW LEXUS NX 300h GETS A GRIP WITH E-FOUR ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The new Lexus NX 300h isn’t simply a crossover with SUV looks, it comes equipped with an intelligent electric all-wheel drive system that provides extra grip just when the driver needs it. Light and compact, the clever technology also avoids the weight, packaging, emissions and fuel consumption penalties associated with larger, mechanical AWD systems.

Called E-Four, the system uses an additional electric motor to drive the rear axle, providing more grip and better vehicle control on slippery surfaces. The front axle is propelled by power from the hybrid petrol engine or electric motor, or both in combination.

E-Four works intelligently, varying the amount of drive torque to the rear wheels in line with  driving dynamics and road conditions, to secure just the right level of stability when pulling away or accelerating in low-grip conditions. As operation is automatic, the driver doesn’t have to think about engaging AWD.

It saves energy and fuel, too, as all-wheel drive is only engaged when it’s needed. When the system detects a loss of traction to the front wheels, it reduces the electricity supply to the traction motor in the transaxle and increases the supply to the rear axle motor. The rear motor also acts as a generator for the NX 300h’s regenerative braking system, increasing the amount of kinetic energy that can be harvested and stored as electric power.

E-Four is fitted as standard on all UK versions of the new NX 300h, apart from the entry-level S model, which has front-wheel drive only. Its efficient performance helps the crossover  achieve combined cycle fuel economy of 54.3mpg with 121g/km CO2 emissions.

Safety

The comprehensive active safety package includes a new, full-range Panoramic View Monitor using the highest resolution camera yet to be fitted to a Lexus. In a first for the segment, the NX will be available with an all-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, capable of matching the NX’s speed to the vehicle in front, down to a complete stop.

Other systems include Lane Departure Alert, blind spot monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A head-up display is also featured in the range.

NEW LEXUS NX TAKES SUV DESIGN OUT OF THE BOX

  • Ground-breaking design for the NX, Lexus’s first premium compact crossover
  • Traditional SUV lines make way for sports-influenced styling, inside and out
  • Great looks not at the cost of comfort or convenience, with generous cabin space and room for four golf bags in the boot
  • New NX 300h available to order now, with customer deliveries from October

Lexus is reshaping SUV design with styling for its new NX that owes more to sportscars than slab-sided 4x4s. The model that marks the company’s entry into the mid-size luxury SUV market makes a big visual statement with muscular curves and agile angles, representing the latest development of Lexus’s L-finesse contemporary design language.

The high-impact exterior presents a low, sloping roofline, a cab-forward silhouette, powerfully flared wheel arches and defining bodywork lines that flow directly from the signature Lexus spindle grille.

Making a vehicle appear as though it’s forged from a single piece of metal is a familiar design concept, but Lexus took it to heart by actually pouring molten metal over the die used to make the grille and studying the natural shape the flow created. The result inspired the NX’s angular shape – a look that’s distinct from any other model in its class.

The NX has the most distinctive “face” in the current Lexus line-up, its prominent spindle grille flanked by new LED headlamps and daytime running lights.

It’s not a case of style over substance, though. For example the C-pillar has a wide angle to maximise internal storage width. The crouched look is linked to the NX’s good ramp-over angle performance, and the fact the high point of the roof is set rearward ensures good headroom for rear passengers.

The exterior also achieves an ideal balance between distinctive design and aerodynamic efficiency, a major challenge for the design team given the car’s overall compact dimensions. A rear spoiler was essential to create a smooth flow of air away from the back of the vehicle, and extensive wind tunnel testing revealed that the best results came from giving the leading edge of the fin an upturned lip – a detail that stands out as a design accent while also helping secure the NX a low (0.33) coefficient of drag.

Similarly, the door mirrors and handles have air-cheating design, the latter being particularly eye-catching thanks to a concealed key barrel and integrated single-LED illumination.

The detailed work continues out of sight, beneath the car, where undercovers and spats designed specifically for the NX, ensure a clean airflow.

Where the interior is concerned, chief designer Tetsuo Miki wanted to capture the kind of style impact associated with high-end urban sports gear with a combination of structural good looks and luxurious but functional materials and textures.

His mission has delivered a driver’s cockpit that reaps the full benefit of Lexus’s advances in HMI technology, combined with elements that reflect the NX’s SUV status, such as soft leather kneepads either side of the prominent centre console.

The cabin provides ample space for everyone on board, with best-in-segment space in critical areas. The front-to-rear couple distance is a class-leading 962mm and the high roof design provides exceptional head clearance. The rear knee room is even greater than in some larger SUV models.

Luggage space is generous and practical. Maximum loadspace width is 1,347mm, enough for four golf bags to be stowed sideways, rather than across the diagonal. More storage space is available under the luggage board, taking total luggage capacity to 555 litres in hybrid versions and 580 litres in the turbo petrol (with a tyre repair kit carried).

True to its status as a practical SUV, the NX comes with a wide variety of storage points around the cabin, including glove and console boxes, a console tray, utility box, sunglasses hold, cup holders and door pocket holders for half-litre bottles. Throughout there is a typically Lexus attention to detail, as in the high-friction material used to line the inside of the cup holder that lets the driver open a twist-cap bottle one-handed.

The new full hybrid NX 300h is available to order now with customer deliveries from October. Next year the range will grow to include the NX 200t, the first model to adopt Lexus’s new 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine.
