- Ford brand 2013 retail sales up 14 percent, with cars up 12 percent, utilities up 13 percent, trucks up 17 percent; Ford is best-selling brand for fourth consecutive year

DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 3, 2014 – Ford reigns as America’s best-selling vehicle brand in 2013 for a fourth consecutive year, with annual sales records set for Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Escape, and F-Series continuing as the country’s best-selling truck and vehicle for another straight year.
Ford Motor Company 2013 U.S. sales totaled 2,493,918 vehicles. For December, total sales are 218,058 vehicles up 2 percent – with retail up 3 percent.
Ford brand U.S. retail sales are up 14 percent for the year. Overall, the Ford brand closes out 2013 with 2,412,224 vehicles sold. Ford produced double-digit annual retail gains across its lineup – cars up 12, utilities up 13 percent, and trucks are up 17 percent – with higher average transaction prices. Retail sales gains for the Ford brand are strongest in the West, where sales are up 21 percent, and the Southeast, with sales up 17 percent for the year.
“December was a strong close to an even better year for Ford Motor Company,” said John Felice, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “We saw strong growth across the entire Ford lineup and made significant gains in the import-dominated coastal markets.
“Strong demand for our new cars, utilities, hybrids and trucks provided Ford with the largest share point gain of any full-line automaker in 2013,” Felice continued.
Ford Fusion December performance is up 27 percent with 24,408 sales, setting a record for the month. Fusion sales of 295,280 vehicles in 2013 represent a 22 percent increase, setting an annual record.
Fusion continues to be a significant driver to the company’s growth in the U.S. western and southeastern regions, where retail sales are up 61 percent and 29 percent, respectively in 2013.
Ford Fiesta sales of 71,073 vehicles for the year mark a record, as well – and up 25 percent over 2012.
Ford Escape sales are up 22 percent for the month, with 24,462 vehicles sold. For the year, Escape sales of 295,993 vehicles represent a 13 percent gain, setting an annual record.
December sales of 74,592 Ford F-Series vehicles extend the truck’s string of selling more than 60,000 units a month to eight. Sales of 763,402 F-Series vehicles in 2013 represent the truck’s highest level since 2006. F-Series remains America’s best-selling truck for 37 straight years and the country’s best-selling vehicle for 32 consecutive years.
Lincoln MKZ December sales increase 73 percent, with 2,823 cars sold, providing the Lincoln brand with an overall increase of 8 percent.
FORD ATTRACTS MORE PRIVATE BUYERS AND STRETCHES UK MARKET LEAD IN 2013
BRENTWOOD, Essex, 7 January, 2014 – Ford strengthened its UK market lead in 2013 while recording 37 consecutive years of car sales leadership and 48 years of UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales leadership. Private buyers were a significant contributor to Ford’s success as they helped increase retail sales and share in 2013, compared with 2012.
Highlights of the official full-year 2013 figures issued today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) include:
- Ford is the number one UK car brand for 37 successive years.
- Ford commercial vehicles have been the UK’s favourite for 48 years.
- Ford stretches its retail car sales lead over its nearest rival by 54 per cent.
- Ford Fiesta is the UK best seller for the fifth successive year.
- Ford Focus is second and Ford Transit sixth in overall vehicle sales.
- Ford Transit maintains its clear lead in CV sales.

According to the official SMMT figures full year car sales in the UK in 2013 were up 10.8 per cent at 2,264,737 registrations, compared with 2012. Ford sold 310,865 cars in the UK last year, up from 281,917 in 2012. Ford’s share of retail cars sales in 2013 was up 1.1 percentage points at 13.1 per cent, compared with 2012, with a corresponding increase in retail registrations from 112,215 in 2012 to 141,144 in 2013.
Ford Fiesta was the UK car sales leader again in 2013, having taken the position from the Ford Focus in 2009, with 121,929 registrations, up from 109,265 in 2012. Ford Focus was second in UK car sales in 2013 with 87,350 registrations, up from 83,115 in 2012.
Underlining the strength in depth of the Ford range, there were increases in sales and share in 2013 for the Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Ford B-MAX, Ford Focus, Ford C-MAX and the Ford Kuga, compared with 2012.
Ford Transit has led the UK CV sector from its launch in 1965 and Ford’s CV market leadership remains unchallenged with a 20.9 per cent share for the full year 2013. Ford medium commercials secured 31.3 per cent of the segment in 2013, up from 30.7 per cent in 2012.
The December registration figures released by the SMMT show that UK car sales were up by 23.8 per cent at 152,918 units, compared with December 2012. Ford car sales were 19,496, up from 15,656 in December 2012 and Ford’s car sales share was 12.8 per cent, up from 12.7 per cent in December 2012. Ford Retail car sales were 7,747, up from 5,445 in December 2012. Ford retail car sales share was up 2.0 percentage points at 12.6 per cent, compared with December 2012.
UK commercial vehicle sales in December were up 62.5 per cent at 33,750, compared with December 2012. Total sales of Ford CVs were up from 3,328 in December 2012 to 5,107 in December 2013. Ford medium commercials, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit, increased sales and share in December, compared with December 2012, up from 2,799 to 4,670 registrations and from 23.3 to 28.1 per cent, respectively.
FORD CV SALES SOAR IN 2013
BRENTWOOD, Essex, UK, January 7, 2014 – Ford commercial vehicles continue to go from strength to strength, as the Blue Oval records its 48th consecutive year of market leadership in the UK, and with best sales results since 2009.
Ford Transit has led the UK commercial vehicle sector from launch in 1965 and Ford’s CV market leadership remains unchallenged since with a 20.9 per cent share for the full year in 2013.
According to official Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ figures, total sales of Ford CVs were up from 66,457 in the full year 2012 to 72,238 for the full year 2013.
Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain sales director, said: “Ford’s CV range is the best ever, offering class-leading vehicles in all key segments, with further exciting models to come.
“The after-sales experience provided by the UK’s largest dealer network together with the huge investment into Ford’s UK commercial vehicle range has helped to deliver the best CV sales figures in four years. Significantly, the increasing strength of that business reflects in a growth in retail demand and a reduction of rental share.”
Combined Ford Transit and Transit Custom sales increased by more than 11.0 per cent year-on-year, from 52,441 in 2012 to 58,446 in 2013. Transit Custom sold 10,939 in its first full year on sale.
Ford Ranger sales increased by more than 50 per cent year-on-year from 2,818 to 4,310, while Fiesta Van sales increased by almost 20.0 per cent from 3,172 in 2012 to 3,792 in 2013 to maintain segment leadership with more than 58.0 per cent share.
Ford is mid-way through the complete transformation of its commercial vehicle range, with the introduction of the all-new one-tonne Transit Custom in late 2012 and the all-new Transit Connect in late 2013. Ford is set to launch the all-new two-tonne Transit and all-new Transit Courier by the summer of 2014, to complete the new four-vehicle Transit line-up.
