The 2017 G-Class

New for the 2017 model year, the Mercedes-Benz G550 4×42 will join the Mercedes-Benz family of SUVs in the United States. The 4×42 is the most capable G-Class ever, boasting innovative portal axles, three locking differentials, a ground clearance of more than 17″ and a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine. The G550 4×42 will be available in US dealerships beginning in early 2017.

Since development of the G-Class began in 1972, the military–turned-passenger- vehicle has been hand-built in Graz, Austria. The name Gelaendewagen translates literally to “off road vehicle.” Since 1979, more than 250,000 vehicles have been delivered to customers around the globe.

In the United States, the G550 4×42 joins the already-robust G-Class lineup, which features the 416 hp G550, the 563 hp AMG G63, and the 621 hp AMG G65, notably featuring a handcrafted AMG 6.0L V12 biturbo engine producing a massive 738 lb-ft of torque.

Following in the footsteps of the AMG G63 6×6 (not available in the US market), the G550 4×42 utilizes the series-model G-Class platform as the starting point for an advanced off-road machine featuring advanced portal axles and aggressive body styling.

Ladder-type frame for maximum rigidity and capability

The ladder-type frame found in the G-Class provides the ideal platform for the immense capability afforded by the G550 4×42. Constructed of steel, up to 4mm (.16 in) thick in some areas, the frame requires over 6,400 individual welds to be fully assembled before it is dip-primed (utilizing electrophoresis) and powder- coated. All interior cavities of the frame are then treated with a hot wax for added protection against water, snow, salt and sand.

The frame of the G-Class provides a robust platform that is better suited for off- road use than a unibody, offering ideal protection for the fuel tank, exhaust system and drivetrain if the vehicle bottoms out on an off-road obstacle. When driving on articulating surfaces, the ladder-type frame prevents the body from twisting forces which could severely damage a more conventional unibody.

No modification or reinforcement to the frame found under existing G-Class models was required when building the G550 4×42 despite the adaptation of highly- specialized and capable portal axle system.

Advanced suspension provides traction on demanding terrain

Equipped with dual springs and damper struts, the G550 4×42 has an extremely high range of available spring travel to ensure maximum surface contact even on the toughest off-road terrain. Adjustable-damping shocks are aided by two stabilizer bars ensure a comfortable ride off-road and sporty performance on-road despite a large amount of ground clearance.

Portal axles for increased ground clearance, capability

One of the technical highlights of the G550 4×42 are the portal axles. Unlike a conventional axle, the portal axles found on the 4×42 allow for axle input and the wheel center to be two drastically different heights. By utilizing a series of gears similar to those found in a transmission, power is transferred from the G-Class” rigid axles downward to the wheel hub.

Portal axles allow suspension geometry, steering connections and drive shafts to remain unchanged from other G-Class models thanks to their ability to keep the position of the rigid axles relative to the chassis unchanged. Load is reduced from all reciprocating components, especially the drive shafts, thanks to the internal gears found in the portal axles. Further, as the speedometer takes a reading from the rigid axles, fitting larger and more aggressive off-road tires does not require a recalibration of the speedometer.

The addition of portal axles has provided a max load ground clearance of over 17″ and has increased track width over a conventional G-Class by over 9″ in the front and 10″ in the rear.

The best just got better: The G550 4×42 is more capable than ever off road

The G500 4×42 offers unprecedented amounts of off-road capability, even in comparison with the G550. Portal axles have afforded the 4×42 the ability to off- road where even heavily-modified off-road vehicles wouldn’t dare thanks to massive ground clearance, fording depth, approach, departure and breakover angles.

Specialized drivetrain offers unparalleled off-roading ability

All G-Class models feature permanent all-wheel drive which has been configured for maximum traction with a 50:50 torque distribution to the front and rear axles. With an advanced 4ETS electronic traction control system, a transfer case featuring three 100% locking differentials and an off-road low-range gear, the G-Class family offers unparalleled off-roading ability.

Low Range mode reduces the center differential gear ratio from 1:1 to 1:2 which allows for slow, more controllable off-road driving, including on steep descents. Low Range mode also helps to reduce strain on various drivetrain components.

By locking front, center and rear differentials in Low Range mode, each wheel will spin at the same RPM, thus directing torque to the wheels which are able to obtain traction. The G-Class is able to move forward even if only a single wheel is able to gain traction.

Powerful 4.0L V8 biturbo engine

Featuring a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, the G550 4×42 produces 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque for exemplary on-and-off-road performance. This newly developed engine, featuring twin turbochargers located between the cylinder banks, allows for a compact design that easily fits within the G-Class engine bay.

An aluminum-alloy crankcase reduces weight and ensures maximum strength and the cylinder walls feature NANOSLIDE® technology, which creates a surface twice as hard as a conventional cast-iron cylinder liner while simultaneously reducing friction and improving fuel economy.

Power is transferred to all four wheels by way of a 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission. With no interruption in power between gear changes, short shift times and smooth gear changes, on-and-off-road driving is both more comfortable and efficient than was previously possible.

A classic look with modern touches

The exterior design of the G-Class has become an icon in the automotive design landscape, maintaining the original shape with only minor changes since it first became available for consumers to purchase in 1979*. While the G550 4×42 retains the classic G-Class shape, it boasts an even more intimidating appearance with its extraordinary ground clearance and wide track width.

A comfortable, high-quality interior

Inside, the G550 4×42, occupants are treated to all the safety, entertainment and luxury features that have come to be expected of the Mercedes-Benz brand. An 8″ COMAND® infotainment system, featuring satellite navigation, is equipped as standard.

The G550 4×42 will be available at US dealers by early 2017.

*Mercedes-Benz USA began official imports of the G-Class in Fall of 2002 for MY2003.

The 2017 G-Class

The iconic Mercedes-Benz off-road vehicle continues to be a resounding success with better-than-ever sales on a global basis. The G550 4×42will be available in US dealerships beginning in early 2017.

Since it was originally conceived in 1979 as a vehicle to be used primarily in tough off-road terrain, the G-Class has undergone an astounding evolution. The G550 4×42, the most recent offering in the G-Class lineup, will arrive in dealerships in 2017.

The G-Class today is considered the top model among luxury-class cross-country vehicles, and has provided the gene pool for other very successful SUVs built under the Mercedes-Benz brand. The G-Class has been voted off-roader of the year countless times over the past years, most recently this year. A comprehensive range of features ensures that this classic cross-country vehicle remains in a class of its own in the off-road sector.

These highlights include two powerful V8 biturbo engines for the G550 and AMG G63 and a handcrafted AMG V12 biturbo engine for the AMG G65, a significantly extended range of appointments, a luxurious interior and a few discreet external modifications that nevertheless manage to preserve the timeless, classic design – virtually unchanged since 1979 – that has made the G-Class a true automotive style icon. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 37 years. In its latest evolutionary stage, it offers state-of-the art, powerful engines, a further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features, as well, of course, as its now legendary off-road capabilities. At the same time the design remains true to its down-to-earth, unmistakable style.”

New for the 2017 model year, the Mercedes-Benz G550 4×42 will join the Mercedes-Benz family of SUVs in the United States. The 4×42 is the most capable G-Class ever, boasting innovative portal axles, three locking differentials and a ground clearance of approximately 18″. Following in the footsteps of the AMG G63 6×6 (not available in the US market), the G550 4×42 utilizes the series-model G- Class platform as the starting point for an advanced off-road machine featuring 22″ wheels and aggressive body styling.

Powered by a handcrafted AMG 6.0L V12 biturbo engine, the AMG G65 delivers 621 hp and 738 lb-ft. of torque, with an estimated 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.2 seconds. The G-Class is the only off-road vehicle in its class to combine the electronic traction system 4ETS with a transfer case and three 100% differential locks. The AMG G65 also offers exclusive interior upholstery and exterior paint options, a recently redesigned grille and 21-inch wheels.

In addition to its exterior design, the G550 and the G550 4×42 are the only G-Class models to offer adjustable suspension—a feature never previously offered on the G- Class.

Over the course of 37 years, Mercedes-Benz has refined what was initially a very practically-oriented off-road specialist by giving it a premium interior and road- going qualities on par with those of the premium sedans from Mercedes-Benz.

The interior of the G-Class is characterized by high-quality appointments finished with exquisite materials, and the instrument cluster has been completely redesigned. The driver is greeted by a color instrument cluster display between two round dials. Other standard features include the latest COMAND infotainment system featuring mbrace2, including a navigation system and internet access.
Standard safety features (on all models but the G550 4×42) include the addition of
Blind Spot Assist, the parking aid PARKTRONIC and the adaptive cruise control system DISTRONIC PLUS. The AMG G63 with a handcrafted AMG 5.5L V8 biturbo engine and the ECO stop/start system as standard continue to dominate the model mix in the USA.

Discreet exterior modifications, a complete look inside

The AMG G63 and AMG G65 versions feature a characteristic AMG radiator grille with double louvers, plus distinctive bumpers with large air intakes. Red brake calipers and 20- or 21-inch wheels complement the appeal of its exterior.

The instrument panel and center console have modern controls and are generously proportioned, with exclusively designed trim elements. These give the interior of the SUV a fresh, premium look. Drivers benefit from a color display in the instrument cluster between the two round gauges. A large color screen, conveniently positioned in the center, is part of the COMAND system and incorporates the standard COMAND Controller.

This infotainment system offers, amongst other features, a navigation system,
voice-operated controls and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. In order to ensure that the G-Class nevertheless does not lose any of its character, certain specific design elements in the interior have been preserved. The G-Class retains the grab handle on the front-passenger side, the switches for the three differential locks – clearly aligned within the driver’s field of vision and highlighted in silver trim – and the redesigned shift lever in the lower section of the center console.

The ESP® system includes Trailer Stability Assist and a HOLD function. Further individualization options from the exclusive designo range are available as enhancements to what is already a very high-quality interior.

Sophisticated engines with high power reserves

The available engines for the G-Class include the powerful 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 gasoline engine in the G550 and G550 4×42, which has an output of 416 hp and offers excellent torque of 450 lb-ft. The engine is mated to the familiar 7-speed automatic transmission.

Superior off-roader

The technical qualities of the G-Class continue to be highly prized. The tremendous torque of its engines makes the luxury off-roader an excellent vehicle for towing, while its three electrically controlled 100-percent differential locks, ladder frame and rigid axle characteristics make it an unrivaled proposition in rough, off-road terrain.
